Top bowlers head to Port Alfred

There should be great bowls played this weekend as 22 teams of male bowlers will be on the greens at the Kowie Bowling Club in Port Alfred, in the annual inter sub-districts bowling tournament.

Over 100 bowlers and officials representing seven districts from all over Eastern Cape, including bowlers from as far afield as Colesburg. Teams from East London and District, Port Elizabeth and District, Ciskei, North Eastern Districts, Frontier, Midlands and our own Eastern Areas, will all be taking part in the tournament that will run from midday today (Friday 22 September) until Monday 25 August.

“This is a very prestigious bowls tournament as each district is represented by the best bowlers from all the clubs in their district,” said Brian Aldag of the Port Alfred Bowling Club.

A number of Grahamstown bowlers have made the Eastern Areas side.

The Eastern Areas teams are Team 1:  Clive Bartlett, Bresby Du Preez, Kallie Calitz and Andrew Labuschagne. Team 2 consists of David Freeme, Hein Strombeck, Jacques Krige and Mario Agnew.  Team 3 is Trevor Frost, Dave West, Chris Avis and Brian Aldag.

Each area hosts the tournament once every seven years; as it moves on the next district in line.

“That is why this is a golden opportunity for spectators to see some of the best bowlers in the Eastern Province and Border in action,” said Aldag, “Hope to see you supporting your local bowlers from the side of the greens.”

The tournament begins with registration at 12pm today, followed by the opening ceremony at 1pm. Bowls starts at 1.15pm for the remainder of the afternoon.

Saturday and Sunday bowls starts at 9am until lunch with the afternoon session starting at 1.30pm and finishing at 4.45pm.

Monday bowls starts at 8.30am and will finish at 11.45am with prize giving around 12pm.
