Makhanda’s police stations are both under new command. Colonel Nomsa Mtshagi is the new Commander at Joza Police Station and Colonel Mbulelo Pika is now in charge of the Grahamstown Police Station. They were among 20 officers newly promoted to the rank of Colonel and inducted to the Senior Management Service level of SAPS leadership in the Eastern Cape at Griffiths Mxenge Provincial SAPS headquarters on 3 October 2019, spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni said. A fourth-year Walter Sisulu University Physics student kicked, punched and chopped his way to capturing a prestigious international karate title in Russia last week. Karateka Anele Madlala, 23, beat his Russian opponent Andrei Kizov in front of a partisan home crowd to clinch the World Fighting Kyokushin Organization Grand Prix tournament on 12 October in the Russian town of Suzdal. “The fight was a very tough one. Police have appealed to the public for information after Kenton-on-Sea resident Johannes van der Merwe was found dead in his home on Monday 14 October. A case of murder is under investigation. Van der Merwe, 54, lived alone and according to information a relative tried contacting him yesterday morning. “When he got no answer, he arrived at his house and made the shocking discovery,” South African Police Service spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said. “Both the front and back doors were open and there does not appear to have been forced entry.” The motive for the murder wasn’t known and forensic experts…

Rhodes University BCom student Penang Shirindza won the Best Innovative idea category in the National Intervarsity Entrepreneurship Challenge. The event, the first of its kind, was recently held at the Southern Sun Hotel at OR Tambo International Airport. SAPS Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga welcomed the sentence handed out this week to 51-year-old Lumnkile Manene and 37-year-old Zukile Vena who attacked two elderly women on a farm in Alexandria in the early hours of 29 January this year.
