Amazwi Museum of South African Literature will launch a new exhibition on Noni Jabavu on 20 August 2019 at 5.30pm. Helen Nontando (Noni) Jabavu was a pioneering South African writer who worked and lived all over the world. Her book Drawn in Colour (1960) was the first book published by a black South African woman, followed by The Ochre People(1963). Jabavu’s journalistic career and autobiographical writings were informed by her complex identity. With less than two weeks to go until the end of the 2019 Round Table Winter Knights collection, the support for the campaign so far has been excellent – and there is still time to do more. Project Convenor, Greg Wilmot, reported the expansion of the campaign to nine Collection Points with SAIAB (located on Somerset Street) and the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Rhodes University being the two new additions. Aaron Samuel Mulenga is hosting his Masters exhibition in the Nun’s Chapel at Rhodes University at 5.30pm on Saturday 10 August. Rhodes Fine Arts student Mulenga describes his work as follows: “It deals with the overlaps and slippages between Christian iconography and ‘traditional’ Zambian cultural/religious practices.” Through the use of inculturation, Mulenga combines these seemingly disparate perspectives to create his work.   “Transcendence serves as the entrance point through which to interrogate flight through spiritual means in both Zambian culture and Christianity,” Mulenga says. “This exhibition serves as a platform for questions to be asked and spiritual concepts to be interrogated.” It…

The Eastern Cape’s universities will gather for a celebration of student activities when the annual intervarsity takes place at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth on Friday and Saturday. Civil rights organisation AfriForum says a shortage of police resources is making the Addo area vulnerable to crime, and has pleaded with the community to organise themselves around safety. In a statement, the organisation said the Addo and Kirkwood areas had experienced seven farm attacks since the end of March. In the most recent incident, on 1 August around 8.30pm, 24 farm workers had been robbed of their wages, food and cellphones by nine attackers. Nelson Mandela Museum Youth and Heritage Centre, in Qunu, serves to conduct educational and leadership programmes aimed at preserving the legacy of Nelson Mandela. The Centre was officially opened in 2006. Ever since the Centre’s establishment, the museum has been conducting maintenance processes to sustain the facility on a smaller scale. In 2017, the museum was approached by the department of Public Works and agreed to close for full maintenance. The facility is a ‘must see’ attraction for Nelson Mandela history.
