Over 370 athletes took to the streets of Grahamstown on a chilly Saturday morning for the annual SPAR Oak Cottage Mountain Drive Half-Marathon. The 21km event attraced runners from the across the Eastern Cape, including East London, King William’s Town, Somerset East, Graaff-Reinett and Port Elizabeth. Andile Motwana of Tinarha athletics club was overall race winner in a new race record time of 1 hour 7 minutes 10 seconds. He bettered the previous record by almost two minutes. It’s derby week as Kinswood College host Graeme College and Victoria Girls High School (VG) in their annual sports fixtures. A change has seen this year’s fixtures taking place during the week instead of the usual weekend fixtures. The fixtures started on Monday with the netball and boys hockey fixtures. The action continues on Wednesday with the rugby and girl’s hockey matches taking place at Kingswood. The week’s sporting events culminate on Wednesday at 5.15pm with the 1st rugby encounter. African Connection women’s soccer club hosted a pre-season soccer tournament to celebrate the club’s 21st anniversary celebrations this year. The event was organised by club founder, coach and manager Chris Totobela who said the event was a great success and thanked all clubs for their participation in the tournament, which saw Makana Rhini United (Maru) claim victory by beating Sakhulutsha 2-0 in the final. The tournament started over the weekend of 22 and 23 July with round robin matches. The event was made up of two groups, each consisting of five teams. The top two teams from each group qualified…
