Around 20 brave souls brought their bodies to Grey Dam on Saturday 22 June for the  16th annual Polar Plunge – Makhanda’s (Grahamstown’s) traditional midwinter swim. The words, “into the light” coming at the end of some words of inspiration from George Euvrard set the swimmers off. With Eastcape Pools owner Emile Fox on Thursday measuring temperatures of 8.4C near the edge and 6.9C three metres in, most swam the distance of around 30 metres as quickly as they could. With programmes spanning a wide range of genres, languages and decades, no fewer than three local choirs are presenting shows on the Fringe this year – the biggest ever local choral showing at the National Arts Festival. Byrdsongs, a 12-strong vocal group named for William Byrd whose Mass for Four Voices was their first public performance during Festival 2017, will perform Gabriel Faure’s Requiem. Makhanda’s traditional mid-winter dip in the dam takes place a day after the official Winter Solstice this year. The 16th edition of the annual Polar Plunge takes place at Grey Dam on Saturday 22 June  2019 at 7.30am. Founder and event organiser George Euvrard says this is to accommodate would-be participants who find a workday start tricky. “We’re hoping that by moving the event a day later this year, to a Saturday, more people will be able to take part,” Euvrard said. Ten people were taken to hospital with serious to minor injuries following a collision between a taxi and a sedan vehicle in Makhanda (Grahamstown) shortly before midday on Tuesday 18 June. Earlier, three people sustained serious injuries when their vehicle crashed into an overturned truck in thick mist on the N2 outside the town. The road remained closed for three hours while emergency services cleared the scene. Makana Municipality is working with the South African Police Service to register Makhanda’s main water treatment works and largest storage reservoir as critical infrastructure. This comes as police investigate suspected sabotage at the James Kleynhans Water Treatment Works and Botha’s Hill reservoir that resulted in massive water loss and prolonged outages in the city’s eastern and high-lying areas. Old Collegians continued their unbeaten run in the Sedru Regional League, while Rhodes, Kowie, Lily White and Klipfontein all recorded victories.
