Partner’s horror find

A woman going to investigate after her partner was called outside by two men in the early hours of yesterday found him dead in the yard of their Joza home. It is alleged that the victim was asleep when two men arrived and woke him up. A fight ensued and all the men went outside. The woman became concerned when he did not return and found his body lying in the yard. He had been severely beaten and died at the scene. Police arrested two men soon after and charged them with murder.

Fatal phone call

A man standing next to his car was stabbed, seconds after calling a friend on his cellphone. According to a witness the 47-yearold man, who had parked outside an Extension 6 tavern, had taken out his phone to call a friend inside when three men approached him and tried to grab it. One of the men stabbed him and they all fled. The victim collapsed next to his parked vehicle and died at the scene. A 32-year-old man was later arrested in connection with the murder.

Schoolyard rape

A woman was stabbed and raped by two men in Joza on Saturday night. The 32-year-old woman was alone when two men grabbed her and dragged her towards a nearby school. Pullling her through a fence on to the premises, they then took turns raping her. One attacker stabbed the woman before fleeing.

Homecoming rape

A Phaphamani woman was raped and assaulted by a man who accosted her as she arrive home in the early hours of Sunday morning. Before fleeing the man robbed her of cash. Police arrested a 39-year-old man the next day.

Cellphone arrests

Two men appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, in connection with the mugging of a 16-year-old schoolgirl in Fitchat Street last month. The teenager was followed by a group of men as she walked to school in the morning. One of them confronted her and threatened her with a knife. They demanded her cellphone and fled. The suspects were arrested early this week and have been charged with robbery.

Station mugging

Police have arrested two men following an attack near the station last weekend. The victim told police he had been walking near the railway line in High Street on Sunday afternoon when he was confronted by seven men, five of whom drew knives. They manhandled him and took his two cellphones. During an investigation, police recovered one of the cellphones and on Wednesday morning arrested two men on a charge of robbery.

Link to robbery

A 21-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday morning after police linked him to two cases of robbery that occurred in June 2011. The man will appear in court soon.

Late-night rape warning

Grahamstown police say they are alarmed at an apparent increase in stranger rape after two latenight incidents last weekend, and warn women to be careful when walking home in the early hours. In the first attack, a 23-year-old woman was gang-raped in a toilet near L Street, Tantyi by three men, one armed with a knife and another with a firearm.

In the second, a 22-year-old Grahamstown woman was raped by a man who held a knife to her throat and dragged her into bushes. Police say stranger rape – an attack by someone the victim doesn’t know – is unusual in Grahamstown. The victim and perpetrator generally know each other through social or family interaction.

Muggers target men

Grahamstown police warn of the increasingly violent nature of street robberies, with the victims of several night-time attacks this week – all men – being physically assaulted. The men were robbed at gunpoint or knifepoint, assaulted and cellphones and small amounts of cash taken.

New Street burglary loot

On Friday afternoon three men were arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property linked to a burglary in New Street.

Freedom Day arrest

The Grahamstown Cluster Highway Patrol group arrested a man driving a suspected stolen vehicle on Friday, in an N2 roadblock.

Dagga busts

In two separate cases, three men were arrested for being found with dagga, in Victoria Road and Hlalani Location.

Serious crime arrests

During a special operation on Thursday morning, Grahamstown detectives arrested 13 suspects linked to serious crimes.

Drugs arrests

• A man was arrested in Victoria Road on Friday after he was found in possession of a mandrax tablet.

• A 35-year-old woman was arrested at a house in Hlalani location after police found a parcel of dagga in the kitchen cupboard of her house.

• Police arrested a man in Hlalani location after they searched him and found a parcel of dagga in his
possession.

• On Sunday a 28-year-old man was arrested in High Street. Police stopped after they noticed
two men and one of them took something out of his pocket and tried to dispose of the package.

• A 17-year-old suspect was arrested in Fitchat Street. He allegedly dropped a parcel next to a toilet in a yard and fled when he saw police officers approaching. Two envelopes of dagga were seized.

Stolen property charge

Items stolen in Tantyi location were recovered from a 20-year old man at his home in Extension
8 on Saturday morning. The man faces charges of being in possession of stolen property.

Drunk driving charge

A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly driving a motor vehicle while under the influence
of alcohol. He now faces a further charge of driving an unlicensed motor vehicle. The man was released
on bail.

Culpable homicide?
On Monday morning a car collided with a truck on the R72 between Nanaga and Alexandria. Details are unclear and a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

Taxi knocks pupil
A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened after a taxi struck the backpack of a school pupil on a pedestrian crossing in High Street on Wednesday. The pupil was taken to hospital but was unharmed.

Dagga arrests
Two men were arrested for drug possession in separate incidents on Tuesday night. The first was searched while sitting in a vehicle in Rademeyer Street, and found to be in possession of a small quantity of dagga.
The second was searched in Albert Street, Fingo Village, and police found a small package wrapped in newspaper containing dagga.
On Wednesday morning police arrested a man found in possession of dagga in A Street, Fingo village.

Rape case
A mentally challenged man was asleep in his room at Fort England Hospital on Tuesday when his assailant entered and allegedly raped him. No arrests have been made.

Housebreaking
On Wednesday a man reported that several items, including a Russell Hobbs iron and clothing, were stolen from his home in Fitchat Street.
Food and an electric ukelele were stolen from a Henry Street residence. On Tuesday police patrol found the instrument on a 14-year-old boy.

Car burglary
Items to the value of R9000 were stolen from a vehicle parked in Fitzroy Street.
A wallet containing cash and a driver's licence was stolen from a vehicle parked in Huntley Street on Monday.

WARNING FROM THE POLICE: The community is urged to refrain from buying items off the street without a receipt. It is an offence to be in possession of stolen property. REJECT AND REPORT STOLEN GOODS.

Mystery robbery
Police are puzzled by a robbery on Friday in which a man and his girlfriend were robbed of laptops, cellphones and cameras - despite the fact that the alarm was set and the doors secured. Police are still investigating and no arrests have been made.

Cellphone muggings
* A man returning to the location from town was approached by five men on Saturday, one of whom demanded his cellphone at knifepoint. The men then fled. No arrest has been made and police are investigating.
* A 15-year-old girl was robbed of her cellphone at Eluxolweni location on Saturday by two men who threatened her with a knife. Police have arrested one man in connection with the incident and are looking for the second suspect.

Bad call
A man who stopped to answer his cellphone was robbed of the phone and R250 at Orsmond Terrace on Friday. The two muggers fled. No arrest has been made.

Cradock Road death

A person died and four were critically injured in an incident on the Cradock Road on Sunday. Police
said the driver of a vehicle, carrying seven passengers from Riebeeck East to Grahamstown,
appeared to have lost control on a curve. One person died at the scene and four others were taken
to hospital.

Drunk driving arrest

A woman was arrested on Saturday night after she crashed the car she was driving into a wall in
African Street. Police said she was not injured and claimed that she was very drunk. She was taken
into custody and charged with drunk driving.
