Apology from friend of snake-attack victim

I, Boom, friend of the late Shaun Moolman who died on Sunday, would like to extend my apology to Grocott's Mail and Lungile Mpharu and all the staff for threatening them. I was very upset about the article he wrote - please accept my humble apology. I would never burn down any building or put a green mamba on any person.

I hope you accept my apology.

Thanking you

Boom

The place of home languages in the new curriculum

The new Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (Caps) for Home Language – out for comment and feedback by 18 October 2010 – presents an impoverished and limited understanding of what a home language might constitute in classrooms and the role it can and should play in the emotional, intellectual and spiritual development of children.

Frederick Van Zyl Slabbert – a personal memoire

With the rugged looks of Harrison Ford, the former First XV No 8 and Hall Warden, Van Zyl looked to be the perfect Stellenbosch product when we met in about 1973.

Encouraged by eternity

What expectations do we have of God? One frequently cited expectation is that if I do everything right, God will act justly and not bring difficulty my way.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” Ephesians 6:10 It’s easy to love life when you are winning and being recognised, when the company is setting sales records, when the church is packed, when others are recognising your achievements.

A new perspective on a Long Walk

Being an avid reader, I was interested in reading Long Walk to
Freedom when it first came out years ago, but I was quickly stopped inmy tracks when someone advised me
not to, saying they had found it quite boring, long-winded and a total waste of time.

But by the grace of God

The apostle Paul credits his salvation, his new birth and his relationship with the living God strictly to the grace of God. In 1 Corinthians 15:10 he writes, “But by the grace of God I am what I am.”

A time of anticipation and excitement

I always have mixed feelings at the start of a new year. There is anticipation and excitement, as we wait to see how things will unfold.

There are the reflections on last year, on its successes and failures and joys and struggles. There is the anxiety around what is to come: how will we do this? Will our plans work? Will we succeed? Will we be able to move forward?

Rainy night in Joza

Grahamstown is unique for its ever changing weather, hot this morning, windy throughout the day or raining in the evening. The locals don’t take likely to this inconsistency as a result one weather phenomenon is always preferred against the other. One afternoon after a scorching 34 degrees Celsius, I could not help overhearing one resident echoing Phil Collins (t
