GENERAL MANAGER
Grocott’s Mail, a Grahamstown-based community media house, is looking to appoint a General Manager who is outgoing and has experience in managing a profitable business. The successful candidate must have entrepreneurial flair and at least five years experience in a similar position.
It would be an advantage to have a tertiary level business qualification, publishing experience and experience in a sales and marketing environment.
General Manager’s responsibilities:
• Ensuring financial stability and viability of the David Rabkin Project (Grocott’s Mail holding company)
• Financial reporting for submission to the Board of Directors
• Compliance with financial, tax and labour legislation
• Drawing up and implementing a business plan for the Project
• Seeking new business and funding opportunities
• Developing business relationships with key players in Grahamstown
• Overseeing the drawing up and implementation of advertising and marketing strategies
• Ensuring proper maintenance of building and infrastructure
• Overseeing IT systems, including network and security
• Supervising all non-editorial staff
• Developing an annual timetable of supplements and revenue generating features
• Working with the Editor to facilitate journalism and media management teaching

CITIZEN JOURNALISM EDITOR
Grocott’s Mail provides Citizen Journalism training courses in the Grocott's Mail Citizen Journalism Newsroom to encourage the people of Grahamstown to write stories, take photos, express opinions and better understand how power works in Grahamstown.
To this end, Grocott’s Mail is appointing a full-time Citizen Journalism Editor to work closely with the Citizen Journalism course trainer to co-ordinate and mentor Citizen Journalism trainees as they begin to make regular contributions to Grocott’s Mail.
If you have:
* a passion for making local democracy work better
* a good knowledge of local democracy in Makana
* some experience as a journalist and / or civic activist
* strong writing skills
* fluency in at least three South African languages (incl. English)
* an ability to mentor writers and photographers with a wide range
of backgrounds
Then this might the job for you!
The position pays a competitive salary and is initially for a one-year contract, with the possibility of renewal.
