Generation Join Up - Background of Area

Background of Area | Project Overview | Community Meeting | The Way Forward | ALL MULTIMEDIA

For the Critical Media Production course we were assigned to the following areas: Hoogenoeg, Mary Waters and Sun City.  Although all of these areas are predominantly Afrikaans and in close proximity to one another, during our civic mapping exercises we found that the three areas were quite diverse.

Due to the structure of Mary Waters, which is made up of brick houses, tar roads and many cars within drive ways, we saw this area as middle class. Being a small community, Mary Waters is situated on an uphill road and is located around the Mary Waters High School.

Hoogenoeg however was seen to be more lower class with dirt roads, some brick houses. It is a close knit community, with people from all generations socialising with one another.  Through speaking to the local people of the three areas, we realised that Hoogenoeg  is notorious for its crime.

Sun City is the poorest of the three areas, with it being made up of exclusively informal settlements.   Through conversations with the residents in this area, we found out that there is a high rate of unemployment and poverty in the area and many residents do not have electricity in their homes and have to use the bucket system.

Through this mapping exercise, the group was able to find informal community leaders as well as crime hotspots and in so doing map out the problems related to crime in these areas.

To see more about this please see our progress report presentation in the ALL MULTIMEDIA section.
