Generation Join Up - Community Meeting

The community meeting was held on the 16th of October 2009. The Hoogenoeg community opened its doors for us and offered the use of the Hoogenoeg community hall.  We were immensely overwhelmed by the number of people who arrived to hear what we had to say.

The hall was packed to capacity with 25 adults and 23 children ranging from pre-school to primary school age. Many women from the community were present but sadly only two men pitched up. Unfortunately there was also only one teenager, which was rather disappointing seeing as teenagers were one of our target audiences. We also ran into some technical difficulty which resulted in our productions not being played to their full potential. We also did not anticipate that some people present were illiterate.  Despite these hurdles the community welcomed us and showed great enthusiasm for the productions we brought to them.

We started off the meeting with a welcoming address by a member of our group Lynn, who conducted the meeting in Afrikaans to accommodate the members of the community. There was a very welcoming atmosphere and a genuine sense of gratitude was in the air. WE were very lucky with our areas as they have great sense of community.

After the meeting Janet Jantjies, a formidable member of the Hoogenoeg community stood up and addressed the audience. It was in this speech that she suggested Hoogenoeg and Sun City work together to alleviate crime in the area. The rest of the crowd was not very open to discussion but three members of the community, Sheila Botha, Janet Jantjies and Gayle from Ghost town were interviewed by the television students.
