News Magazine

This 12-page magazine was divided into two separate sections: one for adults, and one for children. Our adult section focussed on the CPF and other means of initiating community programmes, while the children’s section focussed on ways to avoid criminal activity, and the Department of Social Development.

Mural

The mural aimed to bridge the literacy divide; we hoped that by painting our slogan on a prominent wall in the community, we could visually appeal to residents and promote our public journalism initiative.

Documentaries

One documentary focussed on the story of Mzwakhe Komsani; a student at the Egazini Outreach Centre. A close relationship was built between Mzwakhe and Jess, which resulted in Mzwakhe feeling comfortable enough to take ownership of his story. The documentary successfully exposed the success of the Egazini programmes.

The second documentary was a profile of Akhtar Abbas, a local Pakistani spaza shop owner who is directly affected by xenophobia. Abbas speaks of how his people have been the victims of crime in the area, and how they are not viewed as being a part of the community. The aim of the profile was for the community to be able to see Abbas and others like him as servants to the community as opposed to being viewed as parasites to it.

Slideshows

‘Nothing to Do’ examined what seemed to be the constitutive cause of crime amongst young men in the Joza area- a lack of activities to keep young men stimulated. The aim was not only to expose the problem for what it is, but also expose it as being a problem that is wider than TEM Mrwetyana school, and generate discussion on how possible solutions can be found.

‘The Reasons Why’ was based on the life of a well known Joza criminal. The aim was to analyse and bring about an understanding of his life, and the reasons that contributed to his lifestyle choice, by taking an inward look into his circumstances, his mindset and more importantly, the human behind the actions.

‘Mr Heba: The Link Between the Community and the Police’ took a deep look into a day in the life of the head of the Community Policing forum, Mr Heba. The aim behind this piece was to forge a familiarity between the community and the person whose job it is to provide a link between them and the police.
