Masisebenzisane - The Way Forward

Some of the outcomes of the meeting involved a consensus that Government is not the only party to blame in the case of crime. Despite the fact that the Government should be helping they should not be held solely accountable. Instead the community must look internally and fix this problem themselves.

The community itself needs to collaborate and work towards a developmental plan in order to resolve the crime situation. There was a mutual consensus that more community programmes such as sporting events and after school activities need to be put in place.

Another problem is the celebrity status of criminals who have many possessions and are looked up to and idolised.  The community feels this characteristic should be demolished, as, even though the criminal life seems rewarding in the short term, it has dangerous effects in the long run. The community realised the programme schedule needed to start at the school level.

Plans of more social programmes were being spoken about, one in particular was the sports programme where the community would like to take the children off the streets and onto the fields. Neighbourhood watch programs were also mentioned.

All in all our project did not provide direct quick-fix solutions to crime in the area, however, the community were energised towards working together and taking initiative in the future, realising that we may have begun a project but now the onus is on them.
