THE wind farm, which will be positioned at Waainek and will serve as an alternative energy resource, is well under way.

According to Dr Garth Cambray, who is involved in the project, the farm will start running in  approximately two years time.

This should cushion the blow of the recent news that the National Energy  Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has given Eskom the go ahead to systematically increase electricity overthe next three years.

Cambray says: “The wind farm will become cheaper and cheaper by the year.” Eskom will soon be charging R1 per unit with an annual increase, whereas the wind farm will sell electricity to businesses at the same price but with a lower annual price hike.

Cambray also thinks that Eskom will welcome the idea of alternative energy resources as it “takes the pressure off them”.

The wind farm will not only provide cheaper  electricity but will also play a big role in lessening the impact on the environment.

According to Cambray, the Waainek area is the ideal place to build a wind farm. There is no clay in the area so the turbine will stand on a platform. This prevents the need for builders to dig a hole and place concrete in the soil which eventually causes  pollution.
