The World cup organising committee says there will be alcohol restrictions at the Joza Public Viewing Area (PVA).
According to Jeff Budaza, Local Organising Committee coordinator, soccer fans will be able to buy alcohol from the stalls which will be erected inside Miki Yili Stadium, but they will not be allowed to bring their own alcohol into the venue. Those who are bringing their own soft drinks will not be allowed to bring bottle containers in, but can only bring in cans and plastic containers.
"Everyone is going to be searched before they enter the PVA," he added.
Lieutenant Colonel Johan Botha, a police spokesperson, indicated that there will be zero tolerance towards liquor related offences “at the PVA and National Arts festival and all over Grahamstown”. He indicated that the police will be patrolling all over town covering the two major events.
Botha said: “Drunken driving, public drinking and selling of alcohol to minors will be prosecuted for and liquor related offences will be policed accordingly”.
The PVA will show world cup games on big screens. Budaza added that they gained experience from organising the PVA for last year's Confederations Cup, and he is confident that everything will go right. “We are expecting 5000 people inside the PVA,” he projected.
“The PVA will open daily from 12:00 until 20:30 in the evening with cultural activities featuring from 12:00 to 16:30 during the day and also from 18:00 to 20:30 in the evening".
He stated that It is the municipality' s role to provide opportunities to local business people but that it is their own responsibility to ensure that they have proper licenses in line with Fifa's requirements. He emphasised that those who will be selling without licenses will be doing so at their own risk.
