Car collides with two trucks in Beaufort Street

An accident involving two trucks and a car took place near the intersection of Beaufort and Somerset streets on Thursday morning.

A metallic charcoal Toyota Corolla which was driven by Cosatu provincial leader Paul Notyawa crashed the left side of a truck owned by local driving school MDS Paraffin Hub near the traffic lights at the Beaufort-Somerset Streets intersection .

Eye witnesses said the Corolla tried to change to the left lane at the intersection and collided with another truck belonging to RNS Plumbing Services before it crashed on the stationary driving school truck.

Notyawa said he tried to change lanes when he noticed that the cars in front of him remained stationary despite the traffic lights having turned green. “The truck in front of me was still stationary, I had to move to the left lane because the traffic lights were green,” he said.

Andile Dywili, who was being tested for a Code 10 driver's licence, said he could not believe it when he heard a bang on the side of the driving school's truck. “The traffic lights had turned green and I was waiting for a car that was in front of me to move when I heard the bang,  I'm afraid I might not pass the test because of what happened,” said a worried Dywili.

Meanwhile, the driver of the second truck Andile Maqanda said he was driving on the left lane when he approached the green traffic lights at the intersection. "There was no car in my lane until the  Corolla suddenly turned to my lane and forced me drive on the sidewalk," he explained. "Even that did not help as the car hit my truck on the front right side."

The front part of the corolla was badly damaged, while the two trucks were slightly damaged. Police were called to the scene and took statements from the affected drivers. No person was injured in the accident.

Jan Strydom, a driving instructor from Pronto Driving School who was at scene, said motorists should be patient when they see driving school vehicles especially near intersections. “This is what happens when drivers become impatient on the road,” said Strydom.
