A lot of promises on how the host nation will benefit from the upcoming soccer world cup, but  details about how the tournament will impact on employment in Grahamstown are not clear.

Thandy Matebese, Makana Municipality spokesperson, referred enquiries about world cup-related employment opportunities to Jeff Budaza who is Makana 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC) co-ordinator.

Budaza stated that the LOC has created offices in each province to control everything that will happen during the tournament. In addition to this volunteers and some staff will be at work at the Public Viewing Area (PVA) at Miki Yili Stadium where people will view world cup matches for 25 days.

He added that the tournament has created work for the people and that the contracts of LOC employees will end in August as they will have to wind up proceedings after the tournament finishes in July.

When contacted labour department manager Zanele Papi refused to comment and referred Grocott's online to East London-based Labour Commissioner Vuyokazi Mbanjwa who could not reached for comment.

Matriculant Siyabonga Cagwe, said he is worried about hawkers who have been driven off the streets in town arguing that some of them are bread winners in their families.
