About 17 local drivers took part in a driving competition which was organised by the Department of Transport behind Shoprite Supermarket on Saturday. Taking part in the competition were drivers of articulated vehicles, rigid vehicles and mini buses.
Luvuyo Ncandana, from the Department of Transport, said the competition was aimed at helping drivers improve their driving skills. “One of our aims is to help the companies to see how good their drivers are and also help the drivers to better their driving,” he said. Ncandana added that drivers were judged by the distance between their vehicles and the obstacles that were put all over the place for drivers to manouvre through. The drivers had to drive as close as possible to each of the obstacles without hitting it.
Thembinkosi Dyakala won the mini bus category with 837 points and walked away with a trophy and a wrist watch. In the articulated vehicles' category, Zanethemba Tokwe won with 552 points and won himself a memory stick.
Another driver who is only known as J. Thomas won the rigid vehicles' category with 806 points and won a soccer ball, a wrist watch and a floating trophy. He was followed by Luzuko Makeleni with 668 points, who won a car care kit. Tony Sandi came third and walked away with a R50 Spur voucher with 664 points.
All participants received certificates after participating in the competition and prizes were donated by local businesses.
