Snow delays DJ driving case

The culpable homicide trial of former DJ Luyanda Mona was postponed yet again on Tuesday - but this time no one could blame it on bureaucracy or poor police work.

Mona's trial has been characterised by a series of postponements, since proceedings began in November 2006. At one point the case was even thrown out of court before charges were later reinstated. This time, the presiding officer couldn't get there - literally - because snow was blocking the passes between Queenstown, where magistrate Onica van Pappendorf was, and Grahamstown.

Closing arguments in Mona's trial will now be heard in the Grahamstown Regional Court today. Mona is accused of culpable homicide after he allegedly drove into three men in Nompondo Street, Joza, in November 2006. Ayanda Liwani and Zamile Makafe died at the scene. Sipho Stamper died later.

Last Thursday the court heard that Mona had been drinking on the night and the second state witness, Siphokazi Kalipa, suggested there had been nothing accidental about the incident. She told the court that following an argument with the three men, Mona had vowed to “show the men shit”.

The state closed its case and the defence indicated that it would not call any witnesses. Mona is out on warning.
