Makana traffic officers will be on the streets to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians during the upcoming soccer world cup.

Traffic Superintendent Pierre Kapp said that despite the huge influx of cars coming from the other eight municipalities in the Cacadu district, officers will be on the streets in and around town to enforce traffic laws but will not dampen the festive spirit which will prevail.

He added that officers will be on duty for 12 hours a day and that traffic officers from the provincial roads and transport department will come to assist local officers during the world cup. He stated that the number of local officers will not be enough to handle the huge influx of cars to the city.

Departmental spokesperson Ncedo Kumbaca provincial said the number of his officers which will come to assist local traffic officers will depend on the needs of Grahamstown.

Kapp promised that all traffic lights will be functional during the event and that road signs and markings will be visible to motorists and pedestrians.
