Tantyi family gets toilet instead of RDP house

Zoli Pamela Sakata

A 64-year-old woman from Tantyi location is awaiting her promised RDP house. Zameka Patricia Mdaba lives in a shack at 2 T Street with her husband, four children and daughter-in-law. "In 2005, when RDP houses were build in T Street, a man from the Municipality asked for my ID. I gave it to him and he wrote down things. He said they will build my RDP house in 2009", explains Mdaba. Instead of an RDP house they gave her a toilet only.

"Here in T Street there are some beautiful houses and also RDP houses but I live in a shack", said a frustrated Mdaba. Mdaba is also struggling to survive. "My husband and a son do piece-jobs for a living and my youngest daughter is still at school". In 2006 Mdaba fell and was treated at the hospital. She applied for a grant but when she used the given card and pin there was no money. "SASSA told me that I am fit for work". Mdaba has voted ANC since 1994 "but I am still waiting for service".
