Pumlani and KwaThatha residents are completely dissatisfied with waste and rubbish collection in their area. They say it is enough - they are sick and tired of the lazy municipality workers.
The problem appears to be with the municipality workers, who, according to community members, do not collect and clean around the containers of trash. "They are lazy and irresponsible. The people in charge of trash management must take at least one or two days to assess if the workers are doing what they are supposed to do,” said an angry Pumlani resident, Zukisani Rasana.
The containers provided by the municipality do not make things easy for wheelbarrows, which are sometimes loaded with heavy material or rubbish, making it difficult or impossible for a person to lift its contents into the container. The rubbish is then dumped outside the container.
The container in the area between Pumlani and Thatha has being missing for over two weeks but people have not stopped dumping their rubbish on the site.
The containers are emptied once a month and the cleaning around them is done improperly, with most of the waste remaining unremoved, leaving the environment undesirable.
People living in this area are greatly affected by this waste and rubbish mismanagement. "The smell coming out of it is very bad - people dump bad stuff for example dead animals and used nappies,'' said an old man. "It would be better if these were taken care of in a few days rather than the lengthy period they take to clean up the area. This could lead to children contracting diseases," he said.
