National Arts Festival reports attendance of almost 186 000

The National Arts Festival in Grahamstown has reported year-on-year growth on attendance of 8.47%, with total attendance at Festival events in 2010 reaching 185 776.

Inspiring behind bars

Driven by care and love for the imprisoned, three artists performing at the National Arts Festival took the  festivities to the Grahamstown Correctional Centre last week.

Lucy Hind back in town

Former Rhodes student, Lucy Hind, returned to Grahamstown for the National Arts Festival with her show Extra-ordinary.

Hind graduated from Rhodes University in 2003 with a Masters degree in Physical Theatre and Choreography and is now based in Leeds as a performer and a movement director.

Ticket sales reach new heights

The longer than usual National Arts Festival has proved to be a resounding success in terms of ticket sales. At the halfway mark, ticket sales had increased by 7% compared to last year which is a good sign as the Soccer World Cup has brought about some international media coverage.
 

Spiritually indigenous music for the soul

Thobile Magagula and Gcebile and Bongiwe Dlamini, make up the indigenous Afrocentric musical trio called Spirits Indigenous who travelled all the way from Swaziland to Grahamstown to perform at the Festival this year.

Traditional dancing group Mnombo we Afrika use traditional dancing to educate people about traditional culture and rituals.
 

Mlu Zondi takes audience by surprise

The 2010 Standard Bank Young Artist award winner for Dance, Mlu Zondi gave an interesting slant to contemporary dance in Cinema this Festival.
 

Loving life is Pantsula for Life

Pantsula for Life has taken on a fresh spin this year, fusing the different forms of pantsula dance with other styles which range from the bum jive to krumping.
 

Plastic artist is anything but fake

Artist Simon Max Bannister, otherwise known as MAX, has transformed the National Arts Festival logo into lifesized vibrant polythene plastic sculptures.

Designed by Ireland/ Davenport and launched last year, the entwined red and blue hands can now be marvelled at in 3D form made from discarded materials.
