New record for Mountain Drive

Over 370 athletes took to the streets of Grahamstown on a chilly Saturday morning for the annual SPAR Oak Cottage Mountain Drive Half-Marathon.

The 21km event attraced runners from the across the Eastern Cape, including East London, King William’s Town, Somerset East, Graaff-Reinett and Port Elizabeth.

Andile Motwana of Tinarha athletics club was overall race winner in a new race record time of 1 hour 7 minutes 10 seconds. He bettered the previous record by almost two minutes. Motwana lead from start to finish, picking up the King of the Mountain prize as well. Melikhaya Frans (Ikhamva athletics club) was second in 1:09:04, with his clubmate, Amos Nyongo finishing third in 1:11:20.

The women’s winner was Ndileka Mvakwendlu who finished in 1:32:21. She also won the Queen of the Mountain prize for the first women to reach the top of Mountain Drive. Second woman home was Rhodes University Athletics Club member, Sarah Raubenheimer who finished in 1:34:01. Third women home was Claire McCann.
