A case of intimidation/assault/malicious damage to property was opened and a suspect arrested after a group of Hlalani residents overturned and set fire to the bakkie of an immigrant shopkeeper. The incident, around 11am on Sunday 26 November, occurred at a Somalian owned spaza shop, police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said. Alleging that the shop owner had assaulted a local resident, the group had overturned his bakkie and set it alight. The South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned of increasing scams and false information targeting beneficiaries of social grants. “The latest false information being circulated is that SASSA offices will be closed during the December month and that beneficiaries will not receive their January payments,” the Agency said in a statement. “SASSA would like to assure its beneficiaries that all SASSA offices will remain open for business during December and will only close as usual on public holidays like Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year. The Legal Resource Centre has welcomed the judgment handed down earlier this month that affects married transgender people. The Western Cape High Court recently handed down judgment relating to transgender spouses who are married in terms of the Marriages Act 25 of 1961 and have subsequently applied to the Department of Home Affairs to alter their sex descriptor in terms of the Alteration of Sex Description and Sex Status Act 49 of 2003.
