Kingswood College welcomed Nico Malan to Grahamstown on Saturday 21 July for an intense day of rugby fixtures. After a great day of matches, which saw Kingswood coming out on top in all but two games, the First Team match was played at a tremendous pace in very warm conditions on City Lord’s. Kingswood started the game in a very composed manner and were able to put a number of phases together. Graeme College had another successful weekend of sport over the weekend of 20-21 July. The Junior teams hosting Herbert Hurd, Grahamstown Primary and Oatlands, while the Senior teams travelled to Pearson for a tough rugby derby day. The Graeme Junior School had a great outing against Herbert Hurd, Grahamstown Primary and Oatlands on Saturday. Graeme managed to win all their games against Herbert Hurd, which is always an enjoyable fixture. The Kingswood College hockey club embarked on a unique and exciting set of fixtures over the weekend of 20-22 July, hosting three schools across two days, with a double header on Saturday 21 July. The three schools included Kingsridge High School (KHS) (King William’s Town), Nico Malan (Humansdorp) and Herschel Girl’s School (Cape Town). To kick the weekend off the, Kingswood Seconds, U16 A and U14 A played against Herschel, one of the top girl’s hockey schools in the country. The United Shotokan-Ryu and East Cape Shotokan-Ryu (Grahamstown and Port Alfred) will convene the inaugural Sunshine Coast Karate Open Championships (SCKO) at the Fish River Resort on Saturday 4 August. It is estimated that between three to four hundred athletes of all ages and belt levels will converge at the Fish River Resort to contest the Championship. Not only will the Eastern Cape be well-represented, but athletes are also expected from the Western Cape, Garden Route and Gauteng. Sunday 8 July was the sixth annual G2C Mountain Bike Ride from Grahamstown to Port Alfred. The weather was perfect, with clear skies and no wind. The riders had yet another enjoyable and successful race and the event was well supported by local and national riders as well as the Eastern Cape community. A word of thanks and congratulations to Rhodes University, St Andrew’s College, Kingswood College and the Diocesan School for Girls for making available their firefighting staff and bowsers to put out a large fire at Constitution Street, Queens Grove, and Bedford Street on 12 July. Had it not been for the abovementioned institutions and their staff, with their bowsers a number of houses would have been burnt down during the terrible fire that day. Grade 9 pupil Shaelyn Walker of the Diocesan School for Girls was recently invited to attend a Swimming South Africa Open Water Training Camp in Durban from 24 –30 June 2018. After the camp, she was included in the National Open Water Swimming Junior Youth Squad that will race the Grand Bled Swimming 5km Challenge at the Olimpijski Veslaski Centre in Bled, Slovenia. Swimming South Africa have facilitated this tour in alignment with their high performance strategy of “Train and Race”.
