The weekend of 18-20 May saw a good number of fixtures for the various Graeme College sporting sides. The weekend saw the the Graeme hockey sides take on Kingswood and St Dominic’s Priory, while the junior rugby teams took on some game opposition against Lorraine Primary in Port Elizabeth. The final set of fixtures for Graeme saw the Graeme and Kingswood u13 teams face off in a local tennis derby. St Andrew’s hockey sides travelled to East London on Friday 18 May, to face Cambridge High School in various hockey fixtures. The SAC First Team went 1-0 up in the first minute of their fixture, after some excellent skill from Joe Fisher, and then found it hard to beat the impressive Cambridge keeper. The hard-working SAC team showed maturity and patience to keep to their structures and finally broke open the Cambridge defence after excellent work from Ryan Stoddart, Peter Jarvis and Brad Landrey. The Kingswood First Team rugby took on Port Rex in East London on Saturday 19 May. In a strong performance from the visiting side, Kingswood managed to dominate the majority of the match against their hosts. Kingswood were unable to convert their early pressure into points on the scoreboard. Port Rex showed incredible resilience on defence and it was only after 17 minutes in the 1st half that Kingswood managed to cross over for the first try of the match. The St Andrew’s College Chapel Choir sang at the 180th anniversary of St John’s Anglican Church in Bathurst this past Sunday, 13 May. The service was presided over by Bishop Ebenezer, the Bishop of Grahamstown. The Archdeacon of Albany and Dean of the Cathedral were also at the celebration of this beautiful Romanesque building (which is unaltered) and its active and devout congregation. The College choir had the opportunity to step back in time being accompanied on an old pump organ from the 1800’s. Last week, St Andrew’s College welcomed former student, Adrian Birrell, former Irish National Cricket Team Head Coach and Protea’s Assistant Coach. Birrell presented an inspirational and informative speech to the St Andrews College Grade 11 ‘s. In his message, Birrell shared with the boys his leadership philosophy.
