A case of business robbery is being investigated following an incident at Jojo mini market Spaza Shop in Vukani location, Grahamstown. The incident took place around 7pm on Saturday 9 September. Police Spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said three males entered the shop and pointed a firearm at the shop owner. “They took airtime, cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash and fled,” Govender said. No arrests were made and any person with information is requested to contact the Grahamstown SAPS.

As elderly people gathered at the Ethembeni Old Age Centre on 08 August to  celebrate A  Women’s Day treat hosted for the elderly by a group called Good Friends at Ethembeni Old Age Centre was bittersweet. Ethembeni is a non-residential care facility for the aged, providing nutrition, stimulation and advocacy. It serves retired or disabled persons, including housebound people, to whom meals are also supplied. It had been a month since the centre was closed. “The centre was our safe haven. The teachers and children of Sibanye Special Day Care Centre received a surprise visit from the MEC of Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August on Friday 25 August 2017 during her visit to Makana Municipality. Gifts incuding matresses, toiletries and non-perishable foods were handed over to the centre. The principal of Samuel Ntlebi Primary School, Dudu Myemane, has made a classroom available for the facility that cares for disabled children in Grahamstown. On 18 August 1977 Steve Biko, founder of the Black Conscious Movement in South Africa, was arrested outside Grahamstown. Participants in a 40-year-anniversary commemoration in Grahamstown last week announced a campaign to have Beaufort Street renamed in his honour. Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo) members gathered at the site of Biko’s arrest in a roadblock opposite the former caravan park (now Makana Resort) last Friday. Mziwoxolo Ndwayana, a Grahamstown based boxer, is a World Boxing Federation (WBF) international champion. Ndwayana is preparing to fight for the South African title, which will take place on 9 September in Johannesburg. The South African title is currently held by Thulani Mbenge. The fight was originally set for this weekend, but was rescheduled. Staff and pupils from the Eluxolweni Child and Youth Centre took soup and bread to people at the municipal landfill site as a Mandela Day mission. Eluxolweni helps children who are experiencing problems with their families at home. Some have lost their parents or have been abused. A social worker asses each child, and accompanies them to court until a decision is made as to if the child will return home or come to live at Eluxolweni.
