After a difficult couple of years for both clubs, the Albany Roadrunners and the Saints and Sinners Cycling club have amalgamated to become the Albany Saints and Sinners Multisport Club since 2015. With an entirely new committee in 2018, the Albany Saints and Sinners Multisport Club looks bring back the enthusiasm in the Grahamstown community around running, cycling and any other sports available to people in the town. Rhodes University Archery Club hosted the Eastern Cape Target Championships on Sunday 11 March 2018. In addition to hosting a successful event, Rhodes Archery Club could celebrate a strong performance from all of their archers. However, it was Yashin Naidoo, Derryn Nel, and James McAlpine that really shone in the Grahamstown sun on the day. Naidoo, took home the gold in the Recurve Junior Men division, while Nel and McAlpine, both students at Rhodes, won gold in the Compound Women’s and Compound Men’s competitions respectfully. Saturday 24 March saw the Southern Kings host Benetton Treviso in round 18 of the Pro14 at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium. The Kings were looking for their second win of their debut Pro14 season against their historically weaker Italian opponents. Both teams came out firing in the first half, as both teams crossed the whitewash early. Benetton scored two early tries, with Tomas Baravalle and Marco Lazzaroni crashing over in the first 7 minutes, only one of which was converted by Marty Banks. The Rhodes University Ultimate Frisbee society will play host to this year’s South African Flying Disc Association (SAFDA) Mixed Nationals tournament in late April. This will be the first time that Grahamstown has hosted such an event. The Ultimate Frisbee Mixed Nationals is a team event which contains a mixture of both men and women in each team. Teams from across the country, including several university teams, will converge on Grahamstown on April 27, to take part in the tournament. The Sole Sisters comprises a group of 11 women who formed a running club that focuses on empowering women and children through running and the support of charity donations. With their first “journey” being the success it was in 2017, the Sole Sisters look to continue their positive journey in 2018, with a 107km run of the Baviaans River Conservancy (Eastern Cape) between Blanco and Bedford over three days in late April. The Super 12 semi-final between Swallows and Gardens that took place in East London last week was surrounded in controversy after the match, when a supporter took to Facebook after the game to criticise the officiating of the referee. The Facebook post, which contained severe racist remarks including the use of the “K-word”, alleged that the referee was supporting the Swallows and failed to uphold the rules of the game in a fair manner. It was confirmed on Thursday 1 March that Rassie Erasmus, former Springbok flanker and current Director of Rugby of the Springboks, will take over as the coach of the Springboks from Allister Coetzee. The interesting point in the announcement, however, was the length of time that Erasmus has been appointed for.
