After the Rhodes Internal Premier League (RIPL) Cricket tournament drew to a close on Friday 28 September, David Blenkinsop was named best shot of the tournament, best newcomer of the tournament, as well as best player in his side, the Hill Challengers. The Buco Kowie Striders hosted the Annual Pineapple Run between the Big Pineapple and the Port Alfred Country Club on Saturday 6 October, in the blistering heat. With a 27 km walk and run, as well as a 10 km run, the day was filled with fun, exercise and a lot of sweat. The Striders have been hosting the event for the past 27 years, and this year proved to be another successful race, with a large group of runners coming out to Smash the 2018 Pineapple Run.

After an intense battle against the defending champion, Sean Ness, Makhanda’s Champion, Mziwoxolo Ndwayana won the South African Welterweight Championship in Johannesburg last month. This is the second championship that Ndwayana has won in his eighteen year career, with his previous belt being the World Boxing Federation (WBF) Welterweight championship. Ndwayana started boxing in 2000, but set his sights on the SA Welterweight title a few months ago. “Sean Ness is a southpaw, and I used to watch his fights. The annual Buco Kowie Striders Pineapple Run will once again take place this coming weekend, challenging runners to race from the Big Pineapple in Bathurst to the Port Alfred Country Club. The event, which contains both a 27km and 10km race, is set to take place on Saturday 6 October, with runners from across the province expected to Smash the 2018 Pineapple Run. Rhodes University’s Yondela Masande Norman, won the Purple Gloves Promotions Main event on Friday 21 September in his first ever amateur bout. Norman beat S.C. Ngubo by split decision in the main event of the first ever Rhodes Fight Night event. A joint athlete in both boxing and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) since 2012, Norman went into Friday’s event with no previous experience in a competitive boxing ring. This did not stop him from earning his first career win. Outside of the squared circle, Norman is a keen Mixed Martial Artist, and recently earned his blue belt in Jiu-Jitsu in August.…

The afternoon of Saturday 22 September saw St Andrew’s Lower field covered in tartan, as a number of St Andrew’s pupils and family members gathered to take part in the first Heritage weekend Kilted Mile run. The 1,6km route took the Kilted runners around St Andrew’s Lower field, before running along the perimeter of the school, around the school chapel to finish back at the start line. The run is designed to celebrate the heritage of not only the school, but the pupils and their families as well.

Saturday 22 September saw Queen’s College host the 101st Hirsch Shield Athletics Meeting. This is the oldest schools’ athletics event in South Africa and this year 13 schools from Border and the Eastern Province competed.  Final overall positions in the U19 Hirsch category were as follows: 1st Queen’s College, 2nd St Andrew’s College, 3rd Selborne College, 4th Pearson High School and 5th Grey High School.  – Tony Rubombora (St Andrew’s College) took home first place in the 3000m, in a record time. At the end of the annual Rhodes Internal League Rugby tournament, three players topped the try scoring record, with Sino Ralo, Cameron Libera and Devon Barnard all scoring five tries each for their respective teams. Libera, who has been playing rugby since he was nine-years-old, joined the Rhodes’ First team during his first year in 2016. Having been an active cricket player and a track athlete since high school, Libera is a firm believer in the abillity of sports to create a healthy, balanced life, especially while at university. The Rhino Run, an annual conservation running event, will take place this Sunday 16 September in cities across the country. The Run will take place in Kenton, Port Elizabeth, George, Cape Town, Durban and in Gauteng, will see a growing number of people take to the trails in order to raise awareness and funds in support of rhino conservation. Originating in 2012 after three rhinos were poached at Kariega Game Reserve, the Run has raised around R725, 000 for their beneficiary organisations; the Kariega Foundation, Saving The Survivors, Outraged South African Citizens Against Poaching (OSCAP), and the Chipembere Rhino Foundation.…
