Detectives from Seafield SAPS in Kleinemonde have asked the community to assist in tracking down the killer of 79-year-old Pieter De Coning. De Coning was shot at his home around 11.30pm on Monday night 21 January. Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said De Coning was getting out of bed to challenge someone at the window of his bedroom, when the intruder stuck his body through the window and shot him and ran away. “During the preliminary investigation, forensic experts collected an item of clothing, possibly belonging to the suspect,” Govender said. A 43 year old man was arrested with more than 570kg of dagga near Colchester last night, according to Provincial Police Spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci. The arrest came after Kinkelbos police spotted a white GWM bakkie with a canopy driving at high speed towards Nelson Mandela Bay on the N2 at around 8.50pm. “A short vehicle chase ensued, which ended when the driver left the road and crashed into road signs,” Soci said. Grahamstown Police arrested eight suspects following an armed robbery in King William’s Town  on Wednesday 16 January. South African Police Service spokesperson Colonel Sobingile Soci said Grahamstown Crime Intelligence, Grahamstown Highway Patrol, K9 and Joza Vispol were key to a joint operation with police from King William’s Town, Alice, East London and Port Alfred following the robbery at a retail outlet in King William’s Town yesterday afternoon. The pass rate, the number of successful candidates, the Bachelor rate and the number of Bachelor passes have all hit record highs. STAFF REPORTER Makhanda’s (Grahamstown’s) Ntombizethu ‘Zethu Mpahla and Achumile Sintwa (18) were among the top 1% nationwide for top marks in isiXhosa in the recent IEB examinations. Achumile and Zethu both schooled at Diocesan School (DSG) and are among the select few gifted scholars, whose high school education was covered by the non-profit organisation, Student Sponsorship Programme. STAFF REPORTER IkamvaYouth in Joza achieved an 82% pass rate, far surpassing the provincial average of 71%. Anesipho Pama, who attended Ntsika Secondary School, has been a part of the IkamvaYouth programme since she was in Grade 10. Anesipho earned a Bachelor pass, achieving two distinctions – in IsiXhosa Home Language and Life Orientation. Anesipho said the distance between her school and the IkamvaYouth branch location at times made it difficult. However, she said with hard work and commitment, she was able to make it through. Independent schools in Makhanda (Grahamstown) were successful in the IEB Matric examinations for 2018, with all three enjoying a 100% pass rate. Some highlights are that Kingswood College achieved 138 distinctions; the Diocesan School for Girls’ Nicola Ralston was the top Matric in the Eastern Cape and St Andrew’s College’s Daniel Erasmus was placed in the top 1% of all the IEB candidates who wrote Accounting, Mathematics and Physical Science. Diocesan School for Girls Dux scholar, Nicola Ralston (Port Elizabeth), has been placed on the IEB Merit list for Outstanding Achievement. This means she is placed in the top 5% nationally across six subjects and attained a Level 7 for Life Orientation. Nicola was also the top IEB matriculant in the Eastern Cape.
